'The Conversation' host Catherine Cruz and Honolulu City Councilmember Tyler Dos Santos-Tam.
Downtown Honolulu had an extra buzz on August 11 as a conference room overlooking the trees on Fort Street Mall in HPU’s College of Professional Studies transformed into a live broadcast studio for Hawaii Public Radio’s popular talk program The Conversation.
Host Catherine Cruz sat down with Honolulu City Councilmember Tyler Dos Santos-Tam for a thoughtful discussion on Bill 51, a proposal to create a Downtown Business Improvement District. The discussion continued with Avalon Group CEO Christine Camp, who shared her vision for what the district could mean for local businesses. Cruz and Camp then stepped outside for a taped walking tour of downtown, stopping at a rooftop garden, Pickles at Forté, and HPU’s Downtown Science Laboratories on Fort Street Mall.
Listeners also heard from Victor Lim, chair of the Fort Street Business Improvement District, and Chris Fong of Tradewind Capital, both offering perspectives on how the initiative might reshape the area’s future.
