HPU Cinémathèque French Film Festival
The Department of Arts, Communication, Languages and Media of the College of Liberal Arts, under an Albertine Cinémathèque Grant, is pleased to present their seventh French Film Festival: HPU Cinémathèque. Albertine Cinémathèque which brings French cinema to American college and university campuses, is part of the French For All initiative by Villa Albertine and Albertine Foundation and is made possible thanks to the support of the Centre National du Cinéma et de l’Image Animée (CNC) and Unifrance. This year’s program will be in person and will take place entirely during the Fall semester. The festival has an international focus and this year we have chosen films to reflect the languages taught at HPU along with a ofucs on the language of Cinema.
Nouvelle Vague (New Wave), MonDay, September 28, 6:00 PM

A playful, poignant love letter to cinema, Nouvelle Vague reimagines the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless in an exuberant exploration of the youthful rebellion and creative chaos that shaped the French New Wave. Directed by Richard Linklater, starring Zoey Deutch, Guillaume Marbeck, and Aubry Dullin.
Lumiere, Le Cinema, Wednesday, October 7 3:30 PM, Location: Waterfront Plaza, Building 6, Room 323
In one of those wonderful coincidences of history, lumière, the French word for “light,” was also the last name of brothers Auguste and Louis, whose brilliant invention, the cinematograph, helped to inaugurate the most beloved art form of the last 130 years. Institute Lumière director Thierry Frémaux uses Lumière, Le Cinema! to guide the viewer through over a hundred shorts—some famous, some forgotten, some never before seen—directed by Lumière and company. In the process, Frémaux illuminates how the brothers employed the camera as a creative instrument as they (and their operators) mastered framing, staging, and subject selection for quotidian and exotic microdocumentaries as well as the first ever fictional motion pictures. The result is not only a glorious re(telling) of the genesis of cinema but a profound meditation on the beautiful world captured—and the mysterious world imagined—by the Lumières.

The new film from the visionary director of PACIFICTION, Albert Serra’s AFTERNOONS OF SOLITUDE is a spellbinding documentary that turns its gaze on the ceremonial splendor and devastating brutality of bullfighting in Spain. With quiet intensity, Serra follows famed matador Andrés Roca Rey, from the solitude of his hotel room and the meticulousness of his preparations to the charged spectacle of the arena. Through his immersive and unhurried lens, Serra reveals Rey’s profound physical, spiritual, and aesthetic commitment to a centuries-old ritual—one that demands he take part in a timeless duel between man and beast.

Jean-Luc Godard's debut feature BREATHLESS, starring Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo. The making of this classic French film was the subject of the first selection ot this festival Nouvelle Vague

A documentary portrait of famed Japanese director Akira Kurosawa during the shooting of his epic Ran, focusing less on the logistics of production than on the director’s reserved yet meticulous personality and working methods. Directed by Chris Marker.
