Originally from Cambridge, MA and New York City, Dr. Marek has lived and worked in Honolulu since 1990. He is an Associate Professor of Geography and Urban Sustainability at Hawaiʻi Pacific University (HPU) with concentrations in urban systems, urban built environment, sustainable cities, and Indigenous urban geographies. Dr. Marek received his MA and Ph.D. in human geography from the University of Hawaiʻi, Mānoa, and his B.A. in geography from Syracuse University. He is currently Director of the MA in Sustainability program at HPU, the first sustainability program in the United States to receive accreditation from the newly established Sustainability Education Accreditation Commission. His current research projects include work on Indigenous designed buildings on university campuses; decolonizing universities built on a Western pedagogical and organizational foundation; a comparative study of inner city urban development in Honolulu and Cape Town, South Africa; and issues related to housing and social justice in Honolulu. Dr. Marek is also co-chair of HPU’s Leaders for a Sustainable Future club.
