HPU Doctor of Occupational Therapy - Las Vegas Program

The Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) program at Hawai‘i Pacific University—Las Vegas, will be located southwest of the famous Las Vegas strip, a convenient 15-minute drive from the airport. For on-site lab immersions, the program will boast a brand-new space, specially developed to cater to the needs of the OTD program, complete with an ADL (Activities of Daily Living) suite which will include a functional kitchen, laundry room, and bathroom for the purpose of practical learning. This shared space with the HPU Doctor of Physical Therapy Las Vegas program will promote inter-professional education and collaboration. Las Vegas is a bustling city, known for its views that showcase the beauty of the Western United States, world-class entertainment, and diverse, multicultural population, making it an ideal location for students to reside, work, and socialize. Hawai‘i Pacific University chose Las Vegas to launch their OTD program in part due to the strong cultural ties between Hawai‘i and Las Vegas and the significant influence of Hawai‘i’s tourism on the city’s economy and culture.

HPU OTD Las Vegas will provide outcomes as this information becomes available.

The entry-level occupational therapy doctoral degree program has applied for accreditation and has been granted Candidacy Status by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 7501 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite 510E Bethesda, MD 20814. ACOTE’s telephone number c/o AOTA is (301) 652-AOTA and its web address is www.acoteonline.org. The program must have a preaccreditation review, complete an on-site evaluation, and be granted Accreditation Status before its graduates will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be an Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR). In addition, all states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. Note that a felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure.

The OTD Las Vegas program applied for and received approval for the Partial Academic Pathway from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. This designation allows any of our students who want to pursue becoming a Board-Certified Diplomate in Lifestyle Medicine the opportunity to do so. Specifically, our OT 8210 Health and Wellbeing course was utilized in this application and was approved to waive the 20 hours of live continuing education units that are required to sit for the Lifestyle Medicine Board Exam. This means students would only need to take the board review course to sit for the exam as long as they earn a B- or higher in the course. This reduces time, removes travels, and lowers associated costs that may be barriers for students who are interested in pursuing their LM certification. The waiver is good for three years post-graduation.
