On October 3, HPU Director of the Center for Academic Success (CAS) Joseph Barnett, HPU Student Retention Counselor at CAS Dexter Asuncion, and HPU Student Retention Specialist at CAS Erica Chun presented ongoing work to a national audience of student success professionals at the 32nd National Conference on Students in Transition hosted by the University of South Carolina. Conference participants were university faculty, administrators, and staff interested in high-impact practices at universities, innovative teaching and learning strategies, and the student experience from first-year to career.

The team’s presentation, “Early Warning Indicator and Intervention System Promoting Student Success”, showcased HPU’s university-wide commitment to proactively and intentionally supporting students’ academic success through academic success coaching, tutoring, and mentoring. After providing a literature review of research on predictive indicators of success, intervention approaches and practice guides, cluster-randomized controlled trials, early alerts in higher education, and multiple stakeholders’ perspectives on implementation of early alert systems, the team provided an overview on developing early warning systems and associated interventions, as well as how these systems situate within the research and current student success field.

In the second part of the presentation, the team provided preliminary findings on a multiyear pilot project with concurrent initiatives promoting student success at HPU.

“The Center for Academic Success continues to make an impact on the national stage through innovative initiatives leveraging new techniques and applying interdisciplinary evaluation methods to advance HPU’s mission, vision, and values and promote student success. Our presentation shared our commitment to delivering high-quality and effective services using an improvement science framework for design, delivery, evaluation, and continuous improvement. The selection process was very competitive for this conference, and we were honored to share the outstanding ongoing work at the Center for Academic Success,” Barnett stated.
